New Cedexis Solution Changes the Economics of Streaming Video through Optimization of Quality and Cost

Combining a worldwide view of Internet traffic and Quality of Service metrics for publishers, Cedexis ensures customer delight at the lowest available cost of delivery

Portland, Ore. – April 25, 2017 – Cedexis, the leader in content and application delivery optimization for clouds, CDNs and data centers, today announced the general availability of its real-time predictive load balancing powered both by community data from its Radar Community and Quality of Service (QoS) metrics from each publisher’s audience. For the first time, streaming video publishers can now ensure consistent Quality of Experience (QoE) for their viewers, while using unique algorithms to keep delivery costs to the lowest level possible.

Streaming video QoS measurements were added as a complimentary feature of the Radar service in March 2017, allowing all Radar community members to quickly and easily track core video quality metrics. These QoS metrics can now be integrated into Openmix load balancing algorithms, and used to ensure that end customers receive the video Quality of Experience they expect and demand.

“For years streaming video providers have wrestled with the competing challenges of providing broadcast quality experiences to their consumers, while dealing with the real costs of traffic delivery,” said Ryan Windham, Cedexis CEO. “By integrating QoS metrics into our application delivery platform, Cedexis is helping publishers around the world to thrill their viewers, while protecting their economic models with powerful, real-time traffic delivery decisioning.”

The Cedexis Radar community currently tracks the status of Internet delivery through 10 billion real user measurements every day. This data is then used by the Openmix global server load balancer to make real-time predictive traffic routing decisions, which ensures Cedexis customers consistent quality, and the swift avoidance of congestion and outages. Openmix algorithms – which can be adjusted and executed in just minutes by customers using simple JavaScript code – can also take into account data ingested from other sources to make optimal economic decisions. This data may include contracts with cloud providers, usage tracking from CDNs, performance data from PLM services, and others.

“Cedexis has, for many years, been the go-to provider to eliminate CDN-based outages, and to ensure consistent consumer quality at a fair delivery cost,” said Andrew Marshall, Cedexis Director of Product Marketing. “With the addition of customer-specific video QoS metrics, we are now enabling streaming video providers to take charge of their economic models – ensuring that end-customers receive an appropriate Quality of Experience, without breaking the bank. As Over the Top (OTT) reaches maturity, delivering economic control is every bit as important as providing Quality of Experience consistency.”

Radar QoS and video QoE monitoring is available completely free of charge to any and all organizations. To find out more about Cedexis application delivery solutions, please visit cedexis.wpengine.com.

Cloudinary Extends Its End-to-End Image and Video Management Solution With Cedexis Openmix

Opting for a Multi CDN infrastructure – balancing traffic across multiple content delivery networks (CDNs) – is a no-brainer for delivering excellent quality of experience (QoE) for end users. Known for its easy-to-use media management solution, Cloudinary announced at AWS re:invent 2016 the integration of best-in-class content delivery networks (CDNs) to ensure images and videos are delivered quickly and reliably, based on each user’s unique needs. By enabling intelligent delivery of images and videos across multiple CDNs, Cloudinary can choose the best-performing CDN, based on the features and delivery speed required by customers. This new capability is enabled by Cedexis Radar and Openmix, the next-generation data-driven global load balancer.

Cloudinary uses the Openmix “low latency” application; this ensures great service for their customers, and balances traffic according to the actual state of the Internet. Openmix uses sophisticated algorithms to recommend the best CDN to direct their traffic through. At its heart, it starts with a relative ranking based on round-trips: all else being equal, Openmix will recommend the pathway that provides the quickest image and video content delivery.

Today images account for more than 60 percent of downloaded content. As a result, web developers must find a way to optimize this content to ensure top-notch performance for their sites. Jackie Rosenzveig, Technical Content Writer at Cloudinary, describes the impact of this evolution on  the CDN market in her insightful blog post:

“The ever-increasing emphasis on Web performance these days has lead to more CDN vendors, each with their own value proposition. And while most of the leading CDN providers offer good service to most users much of the time, there is obviously no single provider that will give the best performance everywhere, all of the time, for all traffic types. Image optimization is only one part of the equation. Developers also need to ensure efficient delivery of media, as measured by availability, latency and throughput. CDNs move content closer to end users, helping to improve delivery. However, each CDN may have strengths in specific geographic areas and different performance based on location of the end user, time of day or type of content.”

So, how does Cedexis so dramatically improve availability, latency and throughput?  The answer is, the Cedexis Radar Community.  The Radar community is composed of thousands of websites that host the Radar RUM tag (or SDK) to collect performance data on their site, and the CDNs and Clouds used to deliver their content.  Being a community, each member benefits from the performance data collected by all the other members. Multi-CDN selection by Cedexis is unique because of this community data.  We have insight into the availability and performance of each of the CDNs and Openmix handles the rest.

Cloudinary’s new multi-CDN capabilities create a large, globally distributed network that is optimized for availability and geographic reach. “Our end-to-end solution has offered an easy, efficient way for developers to manage images and videos, from upload to delivery,” said Itai Lahan, CEO and co-founder of Cloudinary. “Up until now, delivery was only available across a single top-tier CDN. With our newest offering, we expand delivery options for our users to include multiple CDNs. This enhancement makes developers’ jobs even easier by greatly improving media management capabilities at a time when the media landscape is growing in complexity.”

Cedexis Partners with Varnish Software to Help Customers Build and Manage Their Own Content Delivery Platforms

New Partnership Combines Benefits of Commercial CDNs and Private Cache Nodes for Low Costs-High Quality Content Delivery

Portland, Ore. and PARIS — October 25, 2016  Cedexis, a leader in internet performance monitoring and optimization, today announced a partnership with Varnish Software, a pioneer in caching software and high-performance content delivery. Through this partnership, Cedexis will offer Varnish Extend, a simple to implement solution that optimizes online media delivery while controlling costs.

Varnish Extend combines Varnish Software’s best-in-class caching software, with Cedexis’s advanced global cloud based load balancing solution for real-time traffic shaping. This powerful combination allows web properties and online media companies to quickly and inexpensively build a customized content delivery infrastructure that can be specifically tuned to their Quality of Experience (QoE) demands, content caching requirements or costs constraints.

“This partnership between Cedexis and Varnish Software makes hybrid architectures accessible to any company that wants to extend its content delivery capabilities and control while providing a high-performance, scalable experience to their users online,” said Lars Larsson, CEO at Varnish Software. “Varnish Extend gives customers the software layer necessary to gain complete control to strategically manage their digital content delivery, global traffic management and costs.”

This trend of companies moving to new content delivery strategies that combine commercial content delivery networks (CDNs) with private cache servers is accelerating.  Large web properties such as Netflix and Facebook have publicly disclosed their movement to private Hybrid- CDN architectures, combining commercial CDN services with their own cloud based caching services. Public broadcasters have started leveraging caching nodes in their local market for live and VOD streaming. Internet Service Providers are using multiple Varnish Software nodes to create their own CDNs for their on-net traffic.

Cedexis and Varnish Software’s partnership will make these type of solutions accessible for any company looking to optimize the experience of their users online. Cedexis along with Varnish Software’s combined products will provide customers the software layer to gain complete control on global traffic management and costs.

“Cedexis has the most complete real time vision on CDN, Cloud and Data-Centre performance from an end-user perspective,” said Julien Coulon, co-founder at Cedexis. “Our customers have been designing hybrid-CDN and building their own CDNs for some time now; however, the partnership between Cedexis and Varnish Software brings a world class solution for both hybrid and DIY CDN to this expanding market on a global basis.”

France’s SFR, a French telecommunications company that provides voice, video, data and Internet telecommunications and professional services to consumers and businesses, is one of the top-ten most visited sites in France.   The company implemented Varnish Plus as a backbone of its private CDN.

“Because SFR delivers video and other large date set formats, we need to chase virtually unlimited objects and deliver fast performance at scale,” said Thierry Magnien, CDN Platform Administrator/Developer at SFR. “With Varnish Extend powering our private CDN, SFR is able to reduce costs and gain control over its content delivery. It’s exciting to see Varnish Software and Cedexis partner up to give more companies the opportunity to create their own CDNs.”

The new Cedexis/Varnish Software Hybrid-CDN solution is available for production use now. Attend the Varnish Software live webinar “How to build a private CDN in four hours” hosted by Cedexis and Varnish Software on November 16, at 9 a.m.(ET)/ 3 p.m. (CET). Impact: Page Resource Timing. The next generation.

Last year we introduced Impact, offering unique data and visualization to connect RUM page performance data to business KPIs.

This powerful tool gives customers the ability to quickly determine where to focus performance efforts to maximize user experience, improve conversions, increase time on site, reduce bounce rates, and any other critical business KPI.

As we know, page level performance is not enough. Page Load Time, Start Render, or even custom timers, don’t tell the whole picture. What your users experience during their visit to your site varies based on many factors, including which resources are served, network performance, CDN caching, performance of your APIs, performance of 3rd party resources, etc.

Waterfall views, like WebPagetest, provide terrific detail into the order and timing for resources, one page view at a time.  A waterfall view gives web developers great insight into page construction, dependencies, and where to find low hanging fruit for optimizations.

What’s been missing is comprehensive visibility into resource performance over time, across all visitors, all devices, all browsers, and all ISPs and networks.  The missing piece in the analytics/monitoring puzzle for devops and webdev teams is this detailed resource performance over time.

At Cedexis, we understand RUM data, and we understand the power of leveraging billions of RUM measurements to improve user experience.  Leveraging our incredible scale, and unique detailed RUM data collection and analytics, we have built an industry-first solution – moving beyond the snapshot view of the waterfall.

We are proud to announce an addition to our Impact solution dedicated to delivering the first comprehensive view of resource performance.

Introducing: Cedexis Impact Resource Timing

Stat-distribution-report-

This is the first and only tool in our industry focused on Resource Performance Analytics. Every resource across all of your sites, every page, every device, for every visitor.

The level of detail is stunning. The powerful reporting and visualizations give you deep analysis to allow you to:
– Quickly see which resources are slowing down your site
– Determine which resources affect your user experience
– Connect resource performance with user experience
– Benchmark the performance of your resources delivered by your CDNs, Clouds, and/or data centers
– Visibility into the performance of your own scripts and APIs
– Determine third party resource performance to help set SLAs
– Filter information to uniquely visualize trouble spots
